Sulcata tortoise

The Sulcata Tortoise, is known to thrive in Northern Africa in places such as Senegal, Mali, Niger, Sudan, Ethiopia, and throughout the heated areas throughout this lovely country. However, despite its natural heritage; it can be found in the pet trade throughout the world including the United States.
These turtles are known to have a broad and flattened carapace (upper shell) which has an even, dark brown or yellow coloration. Like many tortoises, their age can easily be traced by the rings that develop along the scutes (or protrusions on their shells).
Sulcata tortoises require both outside and indoor housing. Simply because they require sunlight to survive. However, when they are outdoors it is important to keep them safe from predation. It is common for animals such as cats, dogs, opossums, and raccoons to prey on a sleeping tortoise.
Their diet is generally full of deep leafy greens and fruit. However, it is important to supplement their diet with specially formulated tortoise food.
