Red footed tortoise

The red footed tortoise (also known as Geochelone Carbonaria) has been a fore-runner of popularity in the world of turtles and tortoises. They are a medium-sized South American native who has begun to be a frequent sighting in homes across the world. Their popularity is probably due in part of their low price. Simply because there are many breeders of the red footed tortoise around; who are willing to adopt them out to almost anyone. With that said, it is important to adopt your new red footed tortoise from a reputable breeder or rescue. This can prevent any un-seen health problems that you may have to deal with in the future.
They are some of the most colorful tortoises around. Their skin along with the carapace (upper shell) is generally a deep rich brown to black with lighter splotches or patches within the centers of the peaks and edges. Of which can range from a yellow tan to deep red coloration. Some of their legs and heads will be decorated by scales that are a deep orange, yellow, or red.
This tortoise species are omnivorous. Eating things such as fruits and vegetables and insects; some red footed tortoise owners will even feed them pinkie or feeder mice. However, their diets should be rounded out by a specially formulated tortoise food to ensure they get all of their nutrients.
