Eastern painted turtle
The
eastern painted turtle is a stunning turtle that is a common household
pet. Its name comes from the paint like markings around its shell.
Generally red, orange, and yellow colors will be found as stripes
decorating their beautiful plastron. However, their carapace (or
outer-shell) tends to be fairly drab; often times a yellow or cream
in coloration. These turtles have black colored flesh with yellow
stripes down their neck and legs.
These turtles can range from four inches to eight inches, with the
females being the larger of the two sexes, which makes it slightly
easier to find out the sex of any one particular turtle.
The eastern painted turtle likes an environment ranging in temperatures
from low-to-mid eighties in air temperature, eighty to ninety degrees
for basking, and low seventies for their water temperature. For
this reason, it is important to have temperature control gauges
and thermometers to create the perfect atmosphere for your eastern
painted turtle.
When feeding your eastern painted turtle you can expect to feed
both live and pellet food. This is so that they can lead an enriched
life. They are omnivores and can be fed meal worms, feeder fish,
and vegetables.
